Every padel listing shouts a K number. Almost none of them explain it, and the assumption most buyers make - bigger is better - is wrong.
What K actually counts
Carbon fiber arrives as tow: a bundle of individual filaments. 3K means each strand in the weave holds 3,000 filaments. 12K holds 12,000. 18K holds 18,000.
So the number describes the weave, not the grade of the carbon and not how much of it is in the frame. A higher K weave uses thicker strands, which lie flatter and produce a stiffer, thinner surface.
What it changes on court
- 3K - the most flex. The face gives slightly on impact, which feels soft and comfortable and holds the ball a fraction longer. Better control, gentler on the arm, less raw speed.
- 12K - the middle. Stiff enough to move the ball quickly, soft enough not to punish every mishit. Most brands build their core range here.
- 18K - stiffest. The ball leaves faster and flatter, and the frame transmits more of the impact to your hand. Least forgiving of the three.
When a lower number is the better racket
If you play three times a week and your elbow complains, 3K or 12K over an EVA soft core will do more for your game than any 18K frame. Stiffness is only an advantage if your technique is clean enough to use it.
The same logic applies to weight: an 18K frame at 13.1 oz (370 g) is a demanding combination. An 18K face on a lighter, softer core is much more manageable.
What about the surface finish?
Separate question. Rough, sanded or 3D-textured faces grip the ball and add spin regardless of the K number. The trade-off is wear - a textured surface loses bite over a season of heavy play, and it is the first thing to go.
The short version
K is a description, not a ranking. Pick the core and the shape first, then let the K number be the tie-breaker between two frames you already like.
